Seminyak is the comfortable answer. It has the widest beach on this stretch of coast, the best restaurant scene on the island, the beach clubs everyone photographs, and enough polish that nothing about it is hard work. It is also the most developed part of Bali and makes no pretence otherwise. If what you want from this island is good food, a sunset drink and a hotel that works, this is where to be.
What Seminyak is
A narrow strip between a main road and a long beach, running north from Kuta and south from Canggu, dense with hotels, villas, restaurants and shops.
The beach is wide, dark-sanded and open to the Indian Ocean, and it is a superb sunset beach rather than a calm swimming one.
The restaurants are the genuine draw: the highest concentration of good eating in Bali, spanning Indonesian, Japanese, Italian and most points between.
The shopping streets run inland from the beach with boutiques, homeware and a great deal of resort wear.
The beach clubs sit on the sand and are the reason a lot of people come, particularly at sunset.
Who it suits
It suits couples, first-timers who want an easy introduction, anyone travelling for the food, people who want a hotel rather than a homestay, and travellers with limited time who do not want to fight the island.
It suits less well anyone looking for the Bali of rice fields and temples, budget travellers, and families with small children who want calm water.

Eating
This is the strongest reason to stay here and it deserves the space.
The range is genuinely wide. Seminyak has serious restaurants doing modern Indonesian, some of the best Japanese in Southeast Asia outside Japan, and a lot of very good casual food in between.
The warungs are still here, tucked between the smart places, and the price difference is enormous for food that is frequently better.
Book the popular places, particularly in the dry season, because the good tables go.
Eat early or late rather than at eight, when everything is full at once.

The beach
Wide and long, which is unusual on this coast and is the practical advantage over Canggu.
Open ocean, with a shore break and rips. Swim between flags where they are set, and treat the sea with respect rather than as a hotel pool.
Sunset is the event. The entire strip turns towards the water at the end of the day, and it is one of the reliable pleasures of Bali.
Beanbags and beach bars line the sand informally, and they are the cheap version of the beach club experience.
Where exactly to stay
Seminyak is narrow, so position along it matters more than area.
Beachfront puts you on the sand with the sunset from your own terrace, at the highest prices.
Between the beach and the main road is the sweet spot: walkable to the restaurants and the sand, considerably cheaper.
East of the main road is quieter, better value and involves a walk or a ride for everything.
North towards Canggu is calmer and less dense, which suits a longer stay.

Practical notes
Traffic in the south is serious, and Seminyak sits in the middle of it. Journeys take longer than the distance suggests, especially in the late afternoon.
Pavements are patchy, which is a real consideration with a pushchair.
Cards work almost everywhere here, more so than in most of Bali, though cash is still useful.
The dry season is busy and the wet season is cheap, with debris on the beaches between roughly November and March.
It is close to the airport by island standards, which makes it a sensible first or last night.
