Canggu is what happened when a stretch of rice fields with a decent beach break met the internet. Twenty years ago it was farmland with a surf spot; now it is the most concentrated cafe, surf and remote-work scene in Southeast Asia, with the traffic to prove it. It is also the area that most often makes people extend their trip. Here is what it is actually like and who it suits.
The shape of the place
Canggu is not a town, it is a set of parallel lanes running from the main road down to the sea, each with its own character.
The beach end is where the surf, the sunset bars and the board hire are.
The middle holds most of the cafes, the coworking spaces, the yoga and the shops.
The inland end is villas, quieter roads and what remains of the rice fields.
Because the connecting roads are narrow and congested, the lane you stay on is effectively the Canggu you experience. Choosing it deliberately is the single most useful decision here.
The surf
This is the foundation of everything else.
The beach breaks along this coast are the reason Canggu exists as a destination: consistent, forgiving at the right tide, and lined with board hire and instructors on the sand.
It is a genuinely good place to learn, and there are more surf schools per hundred metres here than almost anywhere.
It is also real surf, with rips and a shore break that catch people out, so take the lesson rather than the shortcut.
Dawn is the session. The wind comes up later in the morning and the water is busiest in the afternoon.

Eating and the cafe scene
Canggu’s food is its second reason to exist and it is genuinely excellent.
The cafes are the thing it is famous for: a dense concentration of well-run, design-conscious places serving good coffee and food that runs from the very healthy to the very much not.
The warungs in between are cheap, local and often better, and the price difference across a hundred metres is remarkable.
The beach bars at sunset are the daily ritual, and the sunsets here earn it.
The beach clubs are here too, in a scruffier and cheaper version than the polished ones down the coast.

Getting around
Scooters are how the area moves and how a lot of visitors get hurt. Riding legally requires the correct licence with a motorcycle entitlement plus an international permit, checks do happen, and the insurance consequences of riding without them are the expensive part rather than the fine.
Ride apps and drivers work here and are the sensible alternative, with the caveat that some areas have local arrangements about pickups.
Walking is possible within a lane and impractical between them, since pavements are intermittent and the traffic is close.
Traffic peaks in the late afternoon, which is precisely when everyone wants to reach the beach for sunset.
Who Canggu suits
It suits surfers and learners, remote workers, younger travellers, anyone who wants a casual social scene, and people staying more than a few days.
It does not suit anyone wanting calm turquoise swimming water, families with small children, early nights, or a first Bali trip built around temples and culture.

Practical notes
The sand is black and gets extremely hot in the middle of the day, so bring something for your feet.
The sea has rips. Swim between flags where they exist and ask locally where not to swim.
Cash for warungs and small shops, cards nearly everywhere else.
It is loud late in the bar stretches and quiet a lane inland, which is another argument for choosing carefully.
The wet season brings debris onto these beaches, which is a genuine consideration between roughly November and March and is entirely absent in the dry months.

Canggu is black-sand surf beaches, the best casual cafe scene in Bali and traffic that will test you, spread across parallel lanes that each feel different. Book by lane rather than by area, learn to surf here if you are going to learn anywhere, ride only if you have the correct licence and permit, and go to the beach before the sunset rush rather than in it. Pair it with Ubud, and expect to stay longer than you booked.
