Nusa Lembongan is the small, easy, low-effort member of the island group off Bali’s east coast. It is a fraction of the size of its dramatic neighbour, mostly flat, joined to a third island by a narrow yellow suspension bridge, and it runs at a pace that suits a hammock. The reefs around it are genuinely good, the beaches are small and pleasant, and the whole thing can be crossed in twenty minutes. If Penida is the island you photograph, this is the one you relax on.
The island
Small and manageable. You can ride or cycle its length quickly, and the roads are reasonable by the standards of the group.
A beach town on the north coast where the boats arrive, with the restaurants, the dive shops and most of the accommodation.
Seaweed farming is still visible at low tide in the shallows between the islands, and it was the local economy before tourism.
The mangrove channel at the northern end, best explored by kayak or a small boat.
A relaxed pace, which is the reason people extend here.
Ceningan, across the bridge
The yellow suspension bridge is the landmark: narrow, for pedestrians and scooters only, and slightly alarming in the best way.
Ceningan is smaller and quieter, with a handful of places to stay and eat.
The cliff viewpoint on its southern edge looks down into a blue lagoon, and it is the photograph from this side of the water.
The blue lagoon itself is a swimming spot for confident swimmers only, with a serious current and a jump that people have been hurt on.
Half a day covers it comfortably.
What to do
Snorkelling and diving at the reefs and channel sites, including manta points shared with Penida.
Surfing the reef breaks off the north coast, which are for intermediate and better rather than beginners, since they break over coral.
Cycling or riding to the beaches on the west and south, which are small, quiet and good for a swim.
Kayaking the mangroves, which is calm, shaded and a complete contrast to the reef.
Watching the sunset from the west coast, which faces Bali and its volcanoes.
Doing nothing, which is the island’s real specialism.
Practical notes
Boats from Sanur take around half an hour and are cancelled in rough seas, so keep a buffer before any flight.
Onward boats connect to Penida, the Gili islands and Lombok, which makes this a useful link rather than a dead end.
Cash is easier than cards, and machines are limited.
Scooters are the standard transport and the roads are easier here than on Penida, with the usual licence and helmet rules applying.
Power and water can be intermittent, which is part of small island life.
Reef shoes are worth having, since several entries are over coral and sea urchins are common.

The short version
Take Lembongan as the easy island: two or three nights, a scooter or a bicycle, small beaches and a genuinely relaxed pace. Cross the yellow bridge to Ceningan for the cliff viewpoint and a quieter afternoon. Go snorkelling with an operator who checks the tide and briefs you, because the channel between the islands carries a real current whatever the surface looks like. Kayak the mangroves, watch the sunset over Bali’s volcanoes, and keep a buffer between your last boat and any flight.
